Spring Bass on a Fly

Spring Bass on a Fly

One thing I've noiticed over the years coming from Georgia to Denver is that Trout rain supreme in this state! Well I lean towards that infatuation as well but when you consider there are so many freshwater species, mainly that of bass to chase, and a majority of those are within reach from Denver's city limits....all the reason to escape that I-70 traffic jam, high prices of gas and fish for big freshwater species locally.

The Essentials for Bass:

Bass generally spawn in 65- to 70-degree water. The males begin heading to the beds in shallow water from 65 to 68 degrees, and the females start showing up when the water temperature is around 70 degrees. Before the bass spawn, both males and females move to shallow waters. They get into a holding area offshore in deeper water many times, usually on structure or cover, waiting for warmer weather.

Shallow water warms up quicker than deep water so focus on that. Shallow water with lots of structure, dead trees and logs primarily warms up faster than shallow water with no wood cover so look for alot of structure. When snow falls that will put them down but not for long if it warms up again soon. Also keep an eye out for the areas where the warm water runs into the lake are where the fish will hold.

Watch the weather closely: An extended warm front that hits from now until spawning season will make the bass move into shallow water. A cold front will move both fish deeper and make them tougher to catch but not impossible. As bass get ready to spawn and/or begin to spawn, they will stay in the spawning area when a cold front hits.
